Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any extra software?
Probably not. OS X comes with Screen Sharing, so you can connect to Macs out of the box. Fusion comes with a VNC server, so you can control virtual machines out of the box. The only case where you'd need to install a VNC server is if you're using a physical PC.
What servers does Gamma VNC work with?
I've tested Gamma VNC with OS X 10.6.3 and Fusion 3.1 RC. I would expect previous versions of OS X to work. In order to have a nice UI to set up VNC access to virtual machines, you need to be using at least Fusion 3 (earlier versions require .vmx file hacking). In order to power on or suspend virtual machines, you need to be using at least Fusion 2.
Other servers which support version 3.8 of the VNC protocol should work, though I haven't actually tested them. I haven't had the chance to make Gamma VNC backwards compatible with 3.3 or 3.7 servers - it's trivial to do, but it's unclear if there are servers which require this. If you know of one, let me know.
Why isn't Gamma VNC available in my local App Store?
In order to control virtual machines, Gamma VNC uses ssh (and by extension, openssl). This makes Gamma VNC subject to US encryption export laws, so I'm going to have to get through a bunch of paperwork before it will be available outside the US or Canada. Sorry!
Does Gamma VNC support audio?
No. I'd like to have audio, but it's not simple to do.
How secure is Gamma VNC?
The VNC protocol is not encrypted, so someone on your local network can see the display, see keys you press, and where you mouse around to.
Hey, no ads or limitations? What's the catch?
There's no catch. Gamma VNC was my way of learning to program for the iPad, an excuse to write a VNC client from scratch, and a chance to write an app that I plan on using. I don't like apps which plaster ads all over or tease you with very limited functionality.
I am working on Gamma VNC Plus, which will tunnel the connection so it's secure. Gamma VNC Plus will be paid - if you like Gamma VNC, keep an eye out for it.
